Kidney function scintigraphy enables examination of the function (dynamic scintigraphy) and morphology (static scintigraphy) of each kidney individually.

For dynamic scintigraphy, a radiopharmaceutical is injected into a vein. It accumulates in the kidneys and is excreted from the kidneys into the bladder. The entire process is recorded by a gamma camera and evaluated by a corresponding computer program.

With static scintigraphy, the radiopharmaceutical is injected into a vein, and after approx. 50 minutes, four static images are taken in different projections.

  • Captopril nephrography

Examination procedure

Basic nephrography:
The examination is usually performed with the patient in a sitting position. The examination starts at the same time the radiopharmaceutical is injected. The patient is required to sit still in front of the gamma camera for approx. 25 minutes. When the first part of the examination is finished, a radiopharmaceutical is injected for static scintigraphy. Then images are taken approx. 50-60 minutes later.

Diuresis nephrography:
Examination procedure as with basic nephrography, however after the first 25 minutes, a diuretic (Lasix) is injected, and then there is an image sequence lasting 20 minutes.

Captopril nephrography:
Examination procedure as with the basic examination, however 45 minutes before the examination, an ACE blocker (Captopril) is administered orally.


Patient preparation

Sufficient hydration before the examination (at least ¾ liter of fluid). Fasting is not required.

Kidney function scintigraphy should always be done BEFORE pyelography. After pyelography, kidney function is usually disturbed for several days.

Before CAPTOPRIL NEPHROGRAPHY, stop taking ACE-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics 3 days before the examination!
